In 1963, Bill and Susie decided to purchase a lot in the Berkeley Hills and build a home. They hired William Kirsch, a budding architect in Marin County. At the time, he was working with a developer in Marin who purchased vacant parcels and built houses using modifications of his basic plan to suit the particular lot’s characteristics. 1471 Olympus was a variation of his basic design, but Bill and Susie insisted upon 9-foot ceilings on the upper level and added the upstairs bedroom that was originally used as a study. Bill got his Ph.D. at UCLA, and then his professorship at USC, so they have been living in the Los Angeles area since late 1968. Despite the job relocation, they could not let this property go. They are quite attached to their home and in recent years enjoyed visiting their property and drinking coffee in the main living area while soaking in the view.
